WARNING! Sony Wants Your Computer
This is a big story in the music world, but doesn't seem to have really broken wide open in the mass media yet... So here's my basic summary of the story..
BOYCOTT SONY! BOYCOTT THEM RIGHT NOW!
Sony is now shipping CD's by artists on their label with hidden software/spy ware/Trojan virus crap... whatever you want to call it.
The second you put a Sony CD into your computer it instantly, and without asking for your approval, installs hidden Sony software. You have no idea this is happening, and there is no way to stop it. Put a Sony CD by any Sony artist in your computer and it's already too late, they have slipped the software onto your computer.
This isn't just any crap spy ware stuff... this is Sony we are talking about... This is high quality spy ware that most spy ware cleaning programs can't find. Fuck, they have been doing this on some CD's since the start of the year and deep coding computer geeks still have trouble finding this on computers. It's really well written spy ware.
So what's it do? I basically prevents you from making more than 3 copies of any song on the CD. Big deal right????? You're thinking, "I don't make illegal copies"
The big deal is the Trojan part of the program that leave a "backdoor" open to Sony. With this backdoor they could search your computer for other Sony artists, see who else you are listening to, see what else you do with your computer and even install other programs that might do... well, who knows what. (Erase the hard drive of a CD pirate, trace MP3 file sharers, make other label's CD unlistenable on your system etc etc etc.) They aren't doing this right now... but the install of this program leaves all this open to such future uses.
Do a Google search on this stuff... It'll scare the crap out of you... especially Sony's attitude about it. Best thing to do... boycott Sony and pray to God the other big labels don't start using it too. And you won't believe how many artists are on Sony's label and subsidiary labels... Check the CD label and small print before you think of putting it in your computer!!!!!!

Actually, because of all the backlash, and Microsoft telling them that they are going to release software to purge Sony's junk in an update, Sony has stopped with this and is getting all the cd's returned that were sold with the software on it. Interesting hey.
