Conspiracy Theory #9818659

I love a good conspiracy theory... I just don't come up with one myself very often.
But lately...

OK, in the past week I've seen and heard well over a dozen different stories on the news, on the net, on the radio and in the paper that all share the same common theme... What's the common theme? Obesity and being overweight, but it's the slant on these stories that is so interesting.

Here's a few examples off the top of my head from this week.

First story, the BMI (body mass calculator) is a bad way to judge your weight and whether you are unfit. BB'ers have known this forever, but for the ordinary sedentary lifestyle it's not really that bad a chart. But this story makes the average Joe feel that even if his Dr is telling him he is morbidly obese on the BMI chart it doesn't matter cause it's way off anyway. (It's not THAT far off though)

Another large US newspaper story explains the best way to judge you body weight is by hip/ waist ratio. Now this is a great tool, and useful in a lot of situations, but if you are a 300lb woman more than likely your waist and hips will be the same size. So suddenly you don't feel so bad about your weight, even if your health is at serious risk.

Next story talks once again about the obese gene. Yes, that same bullshit they are throwing around that it's not your fault. It's not the fast food or unhealthy choices you make or the fact that you do NOTHING, it's in your genes. Bullshit.

Then there's a story about obese people being discriminated and treated like second class citizens. Oh, lets all feel bad for the people who don't even respect themselves enough to take care of their own body.

Then there's the never ending story about just loving yourself the way you are and being happy that you are not able to get on the floor and play with your kids cause you're too fucking big. Lets not play chase or wrestle, lets all just sit in front of the TV and eat crap.

Then Tyra Banks does a piece on her show where she dresses up as fat and learns how bad obese people are treated. Another "let's all feel sorry for the fat people" story. Their life is so hard, have another doughnuts.

Then last night there was one about a molecular switch that makes you fat and that they are creating a drug to fix it. I like to call that "switch" junk food, and that drug, exercise... but call me crazy.

So how do these stories turn into a conspiracy theory? Well, other than being mostly bullshit what do they all have in common? Well, they all give the message that it's not your fault you are obese or fat, that medical science can't reliably tell you that you are overweight, that medical science is on the verge of erasing obesity, society will change to accept obese people more with more understanding, that you should love who you are and that being obese is OK... Total sum of these media messages... It's OK to be obese.

Now does anyone else find it funny that news story, after news story (and remember those are only examples of the stories that seem to be coming out every day lately) keep coming out giving the message that being obese is OK, right before the biggest food season of the year. Hello... Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years are right around the corner. I'm guessing they are starting now so that by the time Thanksgiving rolls around people actually believe this garbage and will eat eat eat.

The food industry is a BIG interest group and "healthy people" threaten it all the time. When Atkins was riding high, potato farmers had a very hard time, some even lost their farms. Imagine if everyone ate healthy over the holidays... it would hurt or destroy a lot of companies that make huge profits off complete garbage.

But I'm also wondering if certain aspects of the health industry aren't in on this too. The average Joe puts on 7 lbs between Thanksgiving and New Years, and what does he do in January? He buys a treadmill, joins a gym, buys any type of exercise equipment. It's the fitness industry's busiest time of the year and if people don't put on a few pounds they ain't spending all that money on loosing it.

It all seems fishy to me... The media telling us it's OK to be fat and eat what we want right before the biggest eating season of the year... I'm guessing by January the news stories will be talking about loosing weight and healthy eating and obesity shortening lifespans and drive the population into the gyms and stores for fitness equipment.... I'll have to watch for this time of year next year and see if this message of "It's OK to eat and be fat" comes up around the same time again next November....

For the next 8 weeks trust no one over 350 lbs! And come January, trust no one with a 6-pack! They are all in this together!

Gratuitous Hot Chick
(She wonders if it's really OK to be obese... What are you ? Fuckin nuts?)
