Van Halen - Part 3
And the story continues... To everyone's shock Dave actually responded to Mike's interview!
So what did the diamond one have to say? Not a lot, but it was surprisingly positive. He went on about Mike being the foundation of VanHalen and told some stories about early VH days and Dave and Mike stealing lights off people's front lawns to use as their light show. Good old buddies type of stuff.
Big deal right? Well, Dave wrote an entire book ("Crazy From the Heat", it's a good read) about his life, music, VanHalen etc and NEVER mentioned Mike by name. Not once. He just referred to him as "the bass player". So, to have Dave giving Mike respect, lots of it and publicly is quite something new.
Now, there is theories that Dave's book was written right after the 1996 failed reunion and maybe Dave was super pissed at the VH camp (which showed in his book) and simply didn't want to burn bridges with Mike so he kept him out of the book as much as possible. More than likely he just was pissed at Mike at the time. Mike was, and is, really close to Sammy and was against the first reunion in 1996 anyway. He was actually told it was happening when Eddie called him and told him someone wanted to talk to him.. Dave picked up the phone and started selling Mike the idea of the reunion.
So what do we have?
Sammy and Eddie aren't getting along... Sammy found out he was out of VH in 1996 by seeing Dave walk out on stage with them at the MTV awards. Ed said Sammy was too lazy. Sam recorded new albums, toured every year. Sammy also wrote a book which he himself blocked from being published at the last minute and it SLAMS the VH brothers. You can find copies around on the net and it's worth reading cause it confirms everything Dave and Mike have said about Ed.
Dave and Eddie aren't getting along... Dave said Ed was hard to work with and was about money, Eddie said Dave was hard to work with and couldn't get anything done. Eddie has sold everything under the sun (guitars, amps, strings, straps, picks, T-shirts, lighters, hats, pedals, and even repackaged old VH songs twice) and Dave has put out albums and toured, leaving enough time in there to play paramedic for a bit and now do a radio show.
Mike and Eddie obviously aren't getting along... Mike is put on salary for the last tour, has barely played bass on VH records for years, Ed didn't even want him on the reunion tour, he gets no money from merchandise etc. He is basically crapped on by the whole VH machine
Meanwhile Dave is talking to Alex on the phone, both saying a reunion is inevitable. Dave and Mike are both talking about this magic album they recorded that sounds like classic VH but that Eddie won't release. And now Dave and Mike are hinting at getting closure on the whole thing and all Ed can do is call a small radio show at 3am and talk about his favorite wine. (Smoking Loon... basically the cheapest shit you can find)
Hey, end of my VH rant.. Everyone has been a problem in the past, but it's pretty obvious who the problem is right now... there might be more to the stories but I just want to see them on stage together having fun and making that magic party music no one could do like them before or since.

Mike-"How come I don't get to play on the new songs? How come you guys are making a million times more money than me? How come I have to stand in the back all the time? Why won't my old singer even refer to me by name? I'm not impressed with any of you guys at this point!"
