TERRY FOX RUN For Cancer Research

OK, I found a good enough reason to come out of retirement and pop up a new post. Time to do something for my fellow man, my friends, my family and more than likely myself at some point in the future. All that smoking and drinking (among other things) I used to do will eventually catch up with me.
So, let's talk about CANCER.
Cancer effects an insane number of people each year. It is the leading cause of death worldwide. More people die of cancer than starvation, war, heart disease, accidents or anything else!

-There are 153,000 new cases in Canada each year and 70,000 deaths due to cancer.
-In the US there are 1,200,000 new cases each year and 557,000 deaths due to cancer.
-Worldwide there are 58,000,000 deaths due to cancer each year
.
-In Canada 38% of the female population will get cancer in their lifetime and 44% of us guys will get it in our lifetimes.

So if you think cancer will never touch you or your family, you're living in a dream world.

Way back some 25+ years ago(and I remember it happening quite vividly) this young guy who had lost one leg to cancer decided to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research. His name was Terry Fox. He became a national hero and I can remember updates on the news each night at suppertime telling us how he was making out and how far he had traveled that day. In our elementary school we tracked him as well. The nation followed his every move and was shocked when he became too sick to continue after more than 5,300 km. (3339 miles) Less than a year later the cancer won and Terry passed away. Since then there has been the Terry Fox run every year and more than $400 million has been raised for cancer research. More on Terry and the foundation can be found the official foundation site Terry Fox Run Foundation

So all these memories are swirling in my head as I'm running the other day and I think... "I'm out here punishing myself all the time, why don't I do this to help someone else?"... So I decided to sign up as soon as I could, try to raise some money for cancer research, train for the 10 KM run on Sept 17th, and just do it! Enough talk about I should do this or should help here or I should give to this, I'm just gonna do it!

So, if you're a friend, a reader of this site, someone who has taken some inspiration from my own transformation story, someone I've helped by answering fitness related emails, ANYONE.. I'm asking you to give back a little bit. Not to me, but to cancer research. The Terry Fox run is a internationally known and renown event with 100,000's of participants (300,000 last year), no prizes, no rewards... just one good cause and a lot of sweaty runners raising money.

So on Sunday September 17th I'll be busting my ass to make your donations count, doing that 10K run to help us all in someway, someday.
