WOW, How The World Has Changed--- Part 96575

In 1982 there was a TV ad campaign that took over the world... You might remember one of the catch phrases...

"Can't pinch an inch on you!"
or
"Can't pinch an inch on me!"

This whole concept of "pinching an inch" and the amount of body fat on a person really seemed to take the public by storm. I can remember being in gym class and health class at the age of 11 and we all tested our body fat percentages. I can remember going into a science center and my whole family having their body fat percentages calculated using calipers. (only time that was ever done!) I remember actually pinching relatives and friends and seeing how much fat they had... image doing that today!

The thought that if you could "pinch an inch" it was really was a cue that it was time to get busy and loose a few extra pounds of fat.... and I remember that's really how the people around me thought of it. The whole ad campaign might have helped the boom that happened in the fitness industry through the rest of the 80's, but in any case people where very aware of the fat on their bodies and tried to get rid of it.

Welcome to 2006.... Even if we changed the catch phrase to "Can't pinch a foot on me" people still wouldn't care. Well, they might care. They might be so offended that there might be lawsuits.

It's amazing how much body image, fat, obesity, health and social conscious has changed over 20 years, and thinking back to that ad just reminded me how much. People really don't care that they are killing themselves sitting around being inactive and eating crap all day. 20 years ago we would have made fun of that fat kid in the school yard who couldn't run to save his life. Today it seems he's the majority.

BTW- I bag on fat people a lot, But if they are actually trying to loose weight and doing the work it takes (diet and exercise) then they have my utmost respect! Someone eating a bag of M&M and complaining they can't loose weight? Fuck them! But on the other hand when I see some one very overweight out jogging, busting their balls, I feel like pulling the car over and giving them a great big hug... I've been there and it's hard.

Gratuitous Hot Chick
(Think she eats Special K? That was the company with the ad campaign)
