I'm An Idiot --- Edition #3453467757 SKIPPING!

Why, oh why, did I pick skipping rope for the next competition? Sure it looks easy when little girls are doing it, and it looks cool as hell when some ripped boxer is doing it trying to cut weight... but IT'S FUCKIN HARD! I can run for roughly 45 minutes... skip? Maybe 5- 10 before I'm unable to catch my breath and my lungs feel like they are gonna explode. IT'S HARD!

How hard? Here's an good indicator... The world record for continuous running is over 42 days! That's pretty impressive, it's mind blowing actually. The world record for continuous skipping in under 32 hours! To be exact, 31 hours, 46 minutes and 48 seconds by Frank P. Oliveri of the U.S. I guess that blows the theory away I keep hearing that skipping is so easy and that anyone can skip all day long once they get the basic move down. Of course the people who say that haven't skipped since they were 6 years old.

So why do people skip? Why do big brutish boxers skip? Well, it's cheap, there's very little equipment or space needed. It improves your stamina, coordination, and balance. It's great for general conditioning. And if all that wasn't enough, it burns more calories than jogging. How many calories... about a 1000 an hour... 500 in 30 minutes... 250 in 15 minutes. However you read that, A LOT!

Here's some basic tips-

-Wear sneakers! And avoid jumping rope on hard surfaces such as cement or tile. The continuous high impact will wear ya down.

-How do you know what length rope you need? The rope handles should come just to your armpits when you stand and put one foot in the middle of the rope.

-Don't jump 2' in the air. The rope is only 1/4"! Jump only enough (1"-2") to make it over the rope, it lowers the impact of the exercise and saves your knees and shins!

-Start out by doing "rounds". Skip for as long as possible, rest for 30 seconds and go again, repeat till you throw up. (Just kidding about the throwing up part, do it till your bowls give out and you crap yourself.) (Just kidding about the crapping yourself, do it till you feel done, but I'd hope you weren't enough of an idiot to actually shit yourself, if you did, please stop reading anything I write.)

-For reference, the average skipping speed is about 120-140 skips per minute.

There's a million variations as well... Crossovers, Doubles (when he rope goes under you feet twice between each jump), Jogging, The Can-Can, Knees to chest etc etc. Almost anything you can imagine as long as the rope keeps moving.

Really, there's not much more info I can find. There's those that know skipping is wicked cardio and love it and then there's the other 99% of the world that have never skipped as adults and think it's easier that walking. Give it a try, bet ya can't do 15 minutes straight!
