Metallica's "Some Kind Of Monster" PART 2

Well, I finally got around to watching Metallica's Some Kind of Monster and I'm disappointed I did... Here's a few thoughts...

Part 2 "Dave Mustaine".

Megadeth, I LOVED their first album, but never really cared for them much after that. But since watching the movie I've been listening to a lot of Dave and Megadeath. I think I wrote them off way too early as a kid and although I knew the stories I think I took Metallica's side way too early.

So Dave Mustaine is in the movie... First off, WHY? It's supposed to be a movie about making their new album, not Metallica's history, why call Dave up? Dave Mustaine- Co-founder of Metallica, Metallica's first lead guitarist, co-writer of many of their classic songs, the guy who was in the tranches with them when the times where tough.

But why call him up for this movie? Simple. During the time they are talking to Dave we have Jamz in rehab, no bass player, no recordings going on, no writing going on, Kirk and Lars seeing this dumb ass shrink every week and from what the film makers have said they thought the film was over at this point unless Jamz came back.

Lars, footing the bill for the movie and thinking the film was going nowhere, figured bringing Dave in would create an exciting scene and help sell the movie even if filming ended right there...
What other reason is there? They never made up, they never resolved anything, Lars didn't try to stay in touch with Dave, didn't try another meeting to see where they could go with it, Jamz didn't even talk to him (on or off film, even when he came back from rehab all huggy and lovey dovey) and neither did Kirk. It was all simply for the cameras and to create some drama to sell the movie.

So here's Dave's story...

He creates this little band called Metallica with Lars and James. The three amigo's. By the time they find their second bass player, Cliff Burton, the band is creating a new sound in metal and are a real group. They write songs, live together, record demos and play gigs... typical band shit.

Dave and Lars

Dave likes to drink and doest mind getting in the odd fight, but the whole band is young and basically alcoholics and experimenting with drugs. ( don't tell me that story again about Dave getting kicked out due to alcohol! they were all drunks) They are so close as buddies that when Lars gets pushed around by a guy in another band Dave breaks the guy's leg. Seriously, he was that dedicated to his buddies and that protective of them, breaks the guys fuckin leg! At one point for whatever reason, James kicks one of Dave's dogs at a party and Dave attacks James. Dave had to be pulled off James. This seems to be the turning point, and 2 or the massive ego's in the band (James and Lars) turn against him and from then on the band suddenly has lots of excuses to get rid of him.

Metallica just before recording the first album

As they start to record their debut album they figure this is their chance to get rid of him. After a heavy night of gigging and drinking Dave is awoken in a strange city, by his 3 best friends standing over his bed. There is no discussion, no second chances, nothing... He's told to get his bags and beat it.

Dave and James

The band records the first album, 1/2 of which Dave helped write and have Kirk Hammett comes in and play Dave's solos. (Kirk wouldn't be recorded doing anything but solos til the Load album) They even take one of their favorite songs, one Dave wrote and keep everything EXACTLY the same, but have James write different lyric to the same melody so they can record it... it's later called "The Four Horsemen" and is one of their earliest classics, a huge fan favorite. (Compare it to "Mechanix" off Megadeath's first album and you'll see it's the exact same song with different lyrics)

The very first incarnation of Metallica

So now Dave's 3 best friends have suddenly turned their backs on him after he was so violently loyal to them and the Metallica organization. They use his music and everything he worked with them to create, and they become HUGE and Dave has nothing, he's back living with mom for all I know. He's home turning on the radio and hearing his 3 best friends playing music he helped create and becoming famous for it... They won't answer his calls or acknowledge he exists. Like most down and out rockers his drug use gets worse at this point... enter Heroin.

Dave and James
("Hey, when you kick my dog.. I'm gonna punch you in the face...")

So, like a metal warrior, he picks himself up and starts Megadeth. Their first album comes out and of course it sounds like the first Metallica album cause he helped write both. Metallica's underground press network slag him and Megadeth. I can remember as a kid reading what a copy cat he was, that he was the bad guy, etc... Every magazine out there doesn't just come up with these angles, secret back room deals go down and Megadeath are crapped upon everywhere. Metallica rule and Megadeath are the posers.. or so we are told.

Rocking out in 82

This goes on and on and on... to the point that TO THIS VERY DAY people point at Dave EVERYDAY and yell "Metallica" to taunt him. All because a bunch of drunk power hungry kids had big egos and got in a few fights.

Rethink the whole situation... Dave was honest and open in the movie, Lars was using him once again to sell drama in the Metallica camp. Dave came to talk to Lars and the shrink. Lars agrees with everything Dave says. James wouldn't talk to him on or off camera, even later. Lars never tried to follow up on anything. Dave gave his whole world to Metallica as a kid and loved Lars and the boys closer than brothers. As soon as they were going to be making real money they booted him out and still used his songs.

Dave and Megadeth have always gotten a bad rap... I was one of the kids that the brain washing against him had worked on for so many years... Time to take another listen...

Sorry Dave...

Gratuitous hot chick
