Angela's Ashes
I've always been a huge reader. Classics, text books, biographies and even light stuff like Anne Rice. I always seemed to have a book on the go from an early age. Well, I just finished reading Angela's Ashes and I have to say it is one of the best books I have ever read!
The first 2/3rds of the book is honestly one of the best reads I have ever read. The last 1/3 or 1/4 is still way above most the crap out there... It's just that I preferred the first 2/3rds more, probably because of the innocence of the children that starts to wane as they age and see what is really happening and realize more truths about their family and condition.
There are people that crap over how depressing and dark the book is. I think a lot of people lose sight that this is a TRUE STORY, this is how Frank McCourt grew up. Honestly, it is very depressing, but you read this and then that a good look at your own life and you realize how good you have it and that you can do anything and overcome almost anything. In the end the whole experience become quite uplifting.
It's a story of survival. People read stories about plane crash victims, or injured hikers surviving and think they are great heroic stories. This is a story about a young boy surviving through unbelievable conditions and coming out on top in the end. Why is this looked at any different?
It's also a very funny read. You get to know the characters really well and they do some hilarious things. I forget the saying, but it's something about drama creating the best comedy and it's certainly true in this case.
Basically I loved it and I plan to put it into heavy rotation on my book shelf. Hopefully I'll get to it at least every 6 months just to give me a reality check on my life....
