Musician's Friend Acquires Harmony Central
Harmony Central User Forums - official press release: Musician's Friend Acquires Harmony Central
Scary, Harmony Central has always been one of my favorite web music sites.... forever really.
At first they had great tab for guitar through OLGA (the On-Line Guitar Archives) which ended up being taken down for the most part years ago due to legal problems.
Then there are the great user reviews by the average guy who actually bought the gear. Not some magazine editor getting paid to review it, but hundreds of real people who paid hard earned money for the gear, spilling the good, the bad and the ugly about it. Sure there have always been a few reviews in there that the manufacturers have submitted, but for the most part it was on the up and up.
Then there are the news releases, NAMM coverage and the forums. I've met and talk daily with amp and effect builders you read about in Guitar Player magazine in these forums.
All in all it's the best music resource site on the web.... and then they get bought out by Musicians Fiend. Well, Musicians Friend/Guitar Center, they're the same people and are basically the Wal-Mart of the guitar world.
Now, one has to wonder what this will do to everything on the site...
Will the forums become heavily moderated?
Will I still be able to post the word "fuck" under the moniker "little bastard"?
Will boutique guitar, amp and effect builders be push out of the forums?
Will people still be able to sell second hand gear to each other without MF looking to get a cut?
Will the press releases and NAMM coverage only cover equipment Musician's Friend and Guitar Center are going to carry?
Will the reviews be edited and added to so gear Musician's Friend and Guitar Center carries is seen in a more favorable light?
These are just a few questions it raises.... Hum...
